In 2017 I set a goal to get into the best shape of my life. As part of that, I endeavored to run my fastest marathon. “The year of the run” is what I was calling it. I’m proud to say I did run my fastest marathon in Richmond Virginia on November 11th, 2017.  I beat my previous personal best by 22 minutes and I beat my course record for this particular race by nearly an hour!

But I couldn’t do it alone. I hired a coach.

I didn’t hire a coach because I didn’t know what I was doing. In fact, I had completed 11 marathons previously. No, I hired a coach because I knew I was at a point where the next level would require more sacrifice and effort. It would require more strict discipline and it would require an additional set of eyes on everything I was doing. I knew hiring a coach wasn’t about a silver bullet or a quick fix. Yes, it was a financial investment. But more than that it was a commitment to doing the hard work, making the sacrifices and getting gritty about results.

For me, there was no illusion of “easy”

Too often we’re being sold the summit without the climb. “Influencers” are selling the end result hoping you won’t think about the effort involved or the sacrifice required. And maybe rightfully so, many aren’t willing to commit to what it takes to accomplish their dreams and therefore, they never achieve them. But for those serious about achieving more, in order to recognize the recipe for achievement you have to look below the summit… at the climb. My marathon took almost an entire year of training.
  • 163 training runs
  • 983 non-race miles
  • 135,000+ calories burned
  • 157 hours away from my bed, family, and friends
  • Countless early mornings, hot, cold and rainy runs
  • Saturdays? What are those? Can I buy one at Walmart?

What can a coach do for you?

My coach added an extra layer of accountability. She added structure to my objectives and she added understanding and support for a goal that, at times, I didn’t believe I was capable of reaching. She offered so much value because she has a history of coaching other athletes to hit their goals. This meant that when I was convinced I wasn’t built to go fast, she knew I could go faster. When I wanted to cut corners, she knew how it would cost me and called me out. And when I wanted to go easy, she pushed me to work harder.

This is what it takes.

Work. Effort. Sweat. Courage. Accomplishment. It’s worth it. And I believe it’s the only way to truly reach the summit.  What do you want to achieve? A better career? Stronger relationships? Healthier lifestyle? More influence and confidence?
    • Are you ready to work?
    • Are you ready to sacrifice?
    • Are you ready to face your fear of failure?
    • Are you ready to finally break through the ceiling?
    • Are you ready to live on your terms?
